How to Re-Seed Your Edible Birdhouse

When your edible birdhouse starts looking bare or picked over, it’s time for a quick refresh! Follow these simple steps to reapply birdseed and keep your backyard birds coming back season after season.

What You’ll Need:

  • Your empty wooden birdhouse
  • Peanut butter (or Elmer’s glue if you prefer a nut-free option)
  • Birdseed mix of your choice
  • A butter knife or spoon for spreading

Step 1

Remove the Birdhouse

Carefully take down your birdhouse from its hook or mounting spot. Before doing anything else, check to make sure there are no birds currently nesting inside. If you find an old nest, you can remove it by unscrewing the base with a Phillips-head screwdriver.

Step 2

Spread Peanut Butter

Using your knife or spoon, spread a thin, even layer of peanut butter over the wooden areas where you want the seed to stick. Avoid applying it too thickly just enough to act as an adhesive.

Step 3

Apply Birdseed

Gently press or roll your chosen birdseed mix onto the coated areas. You can use a general wild bird blend or customize it based on the types of birds you'd like
to attract. Check out our Types of Seed page to learn more about which seeds attract which birds.
Optional: For extra appeal, you can add fresh Spanish moss or natural nesting materials inside or around the house to make it even more inviting.

Step 4

Rehang and Enjoy

Hang your reseeded birdhouse back in your favorite outdoor spot and get ready to welcome more feathered visitors!
