Product FAQ
What are Edible Birdhouses?
Our Edible Birdhouses are handmade birdhouses made from wood, then covered in bird seed! Birds eat the seeds on the outside of the house, then live inside the house! Once birds have eaten all the seeds off the house, our houses are re-seedable. Simply coat the birdhouse in peanut butter (Elmer's non-toxic glue if allergic to peanut butter), then press your birdseed onto the house. We provide instructions on the box on how to do so!
What birds will be attracted to these houses?
You will see all Types of Birds; backyard and songbirds, attracted to our handmade birdhouses. From Cardinals, to Bluebirds, Chickadees, Wrens, Finches and more – they are all attracted to our Edible Birdhouse. We include a wide variety of all Types of Seeds on every house to attract a wide variety of birds, no matter where in the country you live.
Who builds these?
We do! We build and seed our birdhouses from scratch, in Pennsylvania. We use sturdy white pine for the bird house and fresh bird seeds for the coating. Each house is made with care and attention, then packaged in a beautiful gift box.
What about squirrels?
We’ve got you covered! We mix Habanero Pepper Flakes into the bird seeds of EVERY handmade birdhouses we make. These peppers are hot enough to burn the squirrel's tongue but not hurt them. When they taste the hot peppers once, they typically do not come back. Birds, on the other hand, do not mind the peppers at all! They eat right through it. It is said that birds do not have tastebuds, so they are not affected by the heat of peppers.
Can I store it if I want to give this as a gift in the future?
You can store your edible birdhouse for months at a time. We recommend storing it in a cool, dark place until you are ready to use it.
How do I re-seed the birdhouse?
We include instructions on the box which explain exactly How to Reseed your edible birdhouse! It typically takes 15-20 minutes and is a great, fun family activity.
How do I clean out the birdhouse between birds?
We include screws on the base of the birdhouse to clean out the birdhouse between birds. We recommend cleaning out your birdhouse after the birds have left, otherwise new birds will not want to inhabit it.
How do I hang the birdhouse?
Each edible birdhouse has a hook on the top - simply use twine, string, or wire to hang the birdhouse from your desired location using the hook on top.
What about the decorations on the outside of the birdhouse? Do I need to remove these?
We include various decorations on the outside of our edible bird houses. The Spanish Moss is actually meant to be nesting material! Before putting your edible birdhouse outside, push the Spanish Moss into the house, and this is what birds will use to build their nest!
As far as other decorations on the house, you can decide if you want to keep them on the house or remove them. Birds will not eat the artificial flowers/decorations - they will eat around it. It is up to you if you want to keep them on the house or not.
General Questions
What is an edible birdhouse?
An edible birdhouse is a handmade birdhouse; wooden birdhouses covered in bird seeds, designed to attract birds to your yard. Birds enjoy the seed while the sturdy wooden structure remains as a long-lasting shelter for nesting.
How long does the birdseed last?
The seed coating can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, depending on weather conditions and bird activity. It holds up well in the rain, but prolonged heavy rain may cause some bird seeds to fall off. If needed, you can easily Reseed the birdhouse using the included instructions!
Do birds actually use the birdhouse for nesting?
Yes! Many birds are drawn to the seeded birdhouses, and once they’ve finished eating, they often continue using the wooden house as a safe place to nest and roost.
Where should I hang my edible birdhouse?
For the best results, hang your birdhouse in a sheltered area, like under a tree branch or on a covered porch, where birds feel safe. Make sure it’s high enough to keep squirrels and other animals from reaching it easily. Check our Birdhouse Gallery page for ideas!
Will squirrels eat the birdhouse?
We know squirrels love bird seeds, but our birdhouses are designed to be squirrel-resistant! The seed is mixed with habanero and chili pepper flakes, which birds can’t taste but squirrels find unpleasant. This helps deter them from eating the seed while keeping your birdhouse intact for the birds to enjoy. However, if squirrels are especially persistent in your area, hanging the birdhouse on a shepherd’s hook with a baffle or in a hard-to-reach spot can provide extra protection.
